Meet your guide at the Essex Street Market near near Saxelby Cheesemongers, located close to the intersection of Essex Street and Delancey Street.

Your guide provides a brief introduction to the Essex Street Market, which has been a centerpiece of the Lower East Side for more than 75 years. It is one of only four remaining public markets in New York City, with roots in the immigrant communities of the Lower East Side and the Depression era of the 1930s.

Munch your way through the market with your guide illuminating particular spots along the way. Chat with vendors and learn about the businesses in operation today, which range from recent artisanal entrepreneurs, to classic mom and pop shops, to larger manufacturers.

Expect to try five or six generous samples of both savory and sweet dishes, with enough food to make up a large lunch. The market contains fishmongers, cheesemongers, bakers, coffee roasters, and restaurateurs, and your tastings might include European and American farmstead cheeses, fresh-baked bagels and breads, rice balls, fish sandwiches, tacos, coffee, or a sampling of Japanese dishes.

Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice, please make a note of any restrictions when booking.
