After downtown Boston hotel pickup, begin the drive to Newport, Rhode Island. Enjoy a snack and listen to the guide provide a bit of history about Newport, a sailing destination for many that’s known as America's First Resort. Receive a guidebook and discount card to use on this trip.

The first stop is at the Breakers mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Spend two hours here, part of which can be enjoyed with a self-guided audio tour. Don’t forget the photo-worthy ocean view behind the mansion.

Then take a narrated city tour of some other Newport sites. See the St. Mary’s Church complex. This National Historic Shrine is where President John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953. There’s the Touro Synagogue, a National Historic Site that is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States. It’s also the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America. Also check out Fort Adams, a former U.S. Army post, and the U.S. Naval War College, the staff college and “Home of Thought” for the United States Navy. The guided city tour ends at the Discover Newport Visitor Center to plan some free time with the help of the aforementioned guidebook.

Finally, take a tour of the Elms, a National Historic Landmark that was the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. He made his fortune in the coal industry and would call upon Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to fashion a house after the mid-18th-century French Chateau d’Asnieres outside Paris. Construction was completed in 1901 at a cost of roughly $1.4 million.

After a long day of sightseeing, relax on the journey back to Boston.

    Not a good experience.

Our driver was 40 minutes late... no explanation, no apologies. He didn't speak alot. For the most part we sat in silence. He was a rough driver and my body is battered and bruised from the ride. The ride home was delayed by an hour due to traffic... no break in the evening ride home. The tours themselves were good but had nothing to do with Viator. Not a good experience. This is our third viator tour and the other two were excellent.

Thank you for the review. First of all, We ABSOLUTELY 100% WERE NOT EVEN 1 MINUTE LATE FOR OUR PICKUP ON THAT MORNING. I know because I was there. Your pickup at the Marriott Long Wharf on that morning was between 730 and 745am, as it has been ever since we began doing this trip 8 years ago. I happened to be over there at that time and know you were picked up on time. If you listened to the voicemail you were left you will see that we were in fact on time. So that explains the "no explanation or apology" which clearly prompted this bad review. I am not sure what you mean by a rough driver either, your guide is a professional and has been with us for years and has never had a complaint. I am sorry if you didn't enjoy yourselves but let's at least be fair and factual. Kind Regards, Stephen M. Belcastro President New England Trips Inc.

Our driver was very knowledgeable about the area and sights along the way but did not talk all the time so it was very relaxing. Both mansions we toured were phenomenal. We had plenty of time for shopping and lunch! My favorite tour white in Boston.

Great day trip but eat a big breakfast

Our tour driver was informational, entertaining and pointed out points of interest in both Boston and Newport. The only thing I would change is the timing of lunch. It was a bit late. We were dropped off at 1:30pm for lunch and on our own time for 3 hours. But by the time we walked, found a place to eat and actually got food it was 2pm. We were starving by that time. Had we known lunch would be that late we would have ate a little more for breakfast.
